Coaching Girls Wrestling: Tools and Insights

Coaching. Recruiting. Growing the Sport.

This page provides coaches with the resources needed to build and sustain a strong girls wrestling program. From recruiting and retention to culture and athlete development, you’ll find clear, actionable insights to help you create an environment where athletes can thrive on and off the mat.

How to Recruit Girls and Grow Your Wrestling Program

If you want to grow a girls wrestling program, it starts with one truth. Girls are not always going to find wrestling on their own.

You have to bring it to them. That means being intentional, visible, and clear about what the sport actually offers.

Sell What Actually Matters

Winning is not the hook. Growth is.

Girls are drawn to environments where they can:

  • Build confidence
  • Challenge themselves
  • Be part of something

When you talk about wrestling, focus on what they will become, not just what they will do. Make it real. Make it relatable.

Lower the Barrier to Entry

Walking into a wrestling room for the first time can feel overwhelming. Your goal is to make that first step easier. Create opportunities to learn without pressure. Give them space to ask questions. Help them understand that they do not need experience to start. Confidence comes after they begin, not before.

Build Connection Early

Retention starts on day one. When girls feel connected, they stay. Encourage athletes to join with a friend. Create an environment where relationships form quickly. Build a culture where support is visible and consistent. The goal is not just to bring them in. It is to keep them.

Look Beyond Traditional Athletes

Not every future wrestler is already in your weight room.  Some of your best athletes may come from outside your program entirely. Look for girls who:

  • Enjoy individual challenges
  • Thrive in structured environments
  • Want something different

Use Your Influencers

Coaches are not the only voices that matter. Teachers, counselors, and staff members often have stronger day-to-day influence with students. When those individuals support your program, it builds trust immediately. The more voices reinforcing your message, the stronger it becomes.

The Bottom Line

Programs don't grow by accident.

They grow because someone made it a priority.

Be visible. Be intentional. Be consistent.

That is how you build something that lasts.
